What consumers should be doing to prepare for the holidays

It was only a matter of time after Labor Day before we started seeing displays for Halloween costumes, cards and candy. Yes, Halloween is a few weeks away, but retailers want to make an impression on consumers as soon as possible, so expect to see commercials for Party City advertising Halloween costumes this week as well.

Halloween is not the only holiday that will be coming soon. As soon as the last bit of candy is purchased, displays will quickly transform to holiday season mode, which is the season that retailers depend on to make their profits. So expect retailers to pull out all the stops to get consumers’ dollars.

With that, consumers must be smarter about their spending. It is unfortunately common for consumers, armed with credit cards, to overspend and get into financial trouble that can carry over into the next year and beyond. In the coming weeks before Christmas, we will revisit this topic, but we find it prudent to be proactive (just like retailers) in providing helpful tips to help consumers prepare for smart spending.

Today’s tip has to do with coupons. If you have a smartphone, there are a number of apps that you should familiarize yourself with so that you do not miss out on savings during the holiday season. Check our RetailMeNot, Shopular and These apps carry the latest coupons and can even send you reminders of what retailers have special offers when you arrive at a shopping mall.

In the meantime, pay attention to sales on Halloween costumes and candy.
